Captain Adhar's Flying Circus

OOC Date: April 21st, 2020
Location: Motesta, Tatooine
Participants: Adhar Gann, Zerna, Sion, Kaiden Deitrich, Nubri

It is a nice, sunny day out on Tatooine. Not too hot, not too cool. Not rainy, not that that type of weather were to ever occur on Tatooine, not windy. Perfect for flying. In front of the base, a green person in golden and blue armor, helmet under her right arm, is wobbling forwards and backwards on her feet in anticipation, jetpack with targeting system on her back. Because she herself isn't too familiar with Jetpacks, she decided to try to get some professional help. She got to the captain, who seemed supportive. And because she is certain she can get other enthusiasts, she tried to sent Holomails to... basically everyone whose adress she has in the Array. She even plotted a route to fly, which she is in the process of explaining to said tunnel-snakey human, datapad in hand, excitement evident in her voice... hopefully she won't break any leg this time given the last time she had shown this excitement with a jetpack it almost lead to her drowning in an ocean around Rishi. "So, I had a few ideas where we could go, captain!" she beams, waiting for how many other people would want to fly about on jetpacks "This is going to be so fun!" she squees

Not too far away, Sion is kneeling on the sand, adjusting a fuel feed on another jetpack. It's been showing a -CHECK ENGINE- light since she got it from the armory. At least it's not too different from a turbine-driven swoop's fuel system, being derived from the same technology. She glances up, watching Nubri all but bounce up and down in her excitement.

And not too far away from Sion, Kaiden is strapping on a jetpack, peering over his shoulder at it. He's never worn the thing before, and he's unfamiliar with how jetpacks worked, but he would be a fool not to acknowledge that flying around with a jetpack while shooting at someone was a unique aspect to combat...although he had a secret worry it could be a dead target to snipe someone out of the air. "Won't the flames be too close to me?" he asks as he tilts his head back to peer at it again, voicing another concern.

It isn't just the Crewmen here, of course! Along with the Captain, a squad of Marines stand nearby, watching the demonstration. They're eventually going to be flying themselves, after all. Jump training is vital in space.

Adhar is dressed in Void armor today, the sealed, climate-controlled armor suit perfect for dealing with the heat. He wears his jetpack in professional fashion, mag-clamped to the back of his cuirasse. < We're going to keep pretty close to the base, > he says to Nubri, his voice amplified through the helmet's speaker. < Is everyone ready? Do you need help getting your packs on? >

Zerna was grumbling in Togruta as she stands not far from Adhar and his little minion squad of marines. Dressed in her void armor she just...stands there with her arms folded. Oh she seems amicable enough but insides fuming. She doesn't fly like this....she had thoughts and feelings.

Nubri nods, seeming slightly dejected as she hears they will stay pretty close, nodding "Yes, ready..." she mutters, her excitement returning soon afterwards again, shaking her head at Kaiden "No, don't worry! They won't burn you! Bruise you maybe if you land badly, but not burn you!" she explains, firing her jetpack and hovering above the ground already. Someone is eager

Sion, hearing the mustering call, finishes the work as best she can and stands, hauling the jetpack onto her back and strapping it in place. It takes some fidgeting with the buckles and straps, making it fit over her own distinctively-colored Void armor. She glances over at Zerna, giving her a quick, light jab in the shoulder. "Buck up, Sour-Face Zee. Your montrals are drooping. Give it a chance, you might just learn something fun," she says with a quick grin. Then again, she's biased. She's a pilot.

Kaiden Deitrich looks rather dubious as Nubri says he won't burn himself, even as he watches her fly in what looks like impeccable precision. How could she go into a combat situation all glum but fly the thing all happy? He didn't -quite- want to call it like a ship...he wouldn't be flying that high...least he didn't think he would be flying that high...it probably had a high limit like hover jets, he guessed? He gives a tug at the strap to make sure it's not going to fall off if he somehow loses the grip, and then he saunters over to the area where they're going to start test flying the things, strapping his helmet on. If he got bumped in the head, best with the helmet on. Heavy armor would've been better for this though, he thought.

< All right, all right, > Adhar calls out, stepping out in front of the row of 'students'. < Let's get this started. Hello everyone, welcome to this introduction to jump training. I see that everyone's got their packs on, and it looks like they're all set, so let's start by familiarizing yourself with the technology. Everyone ready? >

Zerna glances over to Sion then rolls here eyes. "Horn do not sag...they're bone." At that she drops the subject. Instead she looks on and listens to Adhar as he speaks.

Nubri nods, doing a small looping as she seems to be experimenting, nodding eagerly "Ready, Captain! I found a nice rock formation to the west from here we could use for precision flying...." she starts to explain, pointing at her datapad again "You know, holes in rocks, corridors to maneuver...." she nods "Yes, Or... Officer. It will be fun, I promise!" she starts

"Could've fooled me a seconds ago," Sion teases once more, then steps away so as not to collide with the grumpy Togruta on takeoff. She gives Adhar a thumbs-up sign to signal her own readiness.

"Holes and corridors to maneuver?" Now Kaiden sounds a little worried by this prospect. He wouldn't even move a speeder in such a confined area normally. "But why would you be flying around in a corridor in a combat situation? You'd be running around most likely, it's close quarters."

Adhar clears his throat. < Stow the chatter, > he says, voice growing drill-sergeant hard. < Doctor, come down here for the moment and get in line. We'll go over the function of the basic flight pack and standard controls first, and then control principles before starting to take to the air. >

"I'm with Kaiden." Zerna ignores Sion for now as she just pinches the bridge of her nose. At that she falls silent again as she hears Adhar. Yeah no she wasn't just taking off...she was going to wait.

Nubri hrmphs as she descends down to earth, landing next to the Socorran, muttering sounds of discontent under her nose. No curses just.... disappointment. Quite like a child whose favourite toy you just took.

Sion flinches as Adhar goes half-drill sergeant, but holds her peace. Seeing the look on Nu's face, she quietly patpats her on the shoulder comfortingly.

It's subtle, but there is a little bit of a smirk on Kaiden's face as he falls silent in the lineup, glancing to the now sulking looking Nubri. Now things were back as they should be.

With an appreciative nod to Nubri - the blast visor is up, so his face is visible - Adhar continues. The basics are laid out, how jump packs tend to combine hot-thrust and repulsorlift technology, vector nozzles out of the way of the pilot's extremeties. How the wrist-worn control pack fits, with its connected flight stick that fits in the hand. Basic maneuvering is first explained, then demonstrated by Adhar, and then, after about an hour or so...

< Right, then, > Adhar says after this lengthy demonstration, < We're going to try and do some basic jumps - not full flight, but flight-assisted jumps. Doctor Nubri, can you assist me? >

Zerna stays quiet as she listens and watches. Yes...arms crossed as she takes in everything. After that time she simply nods and waits for the next action.

Nubri smiles over at the Socorran a little, before muttering something under her nose sounding pretty much like "I don't even like this stupid jetpack all that much." she shakes her head soon enough, though and decides to just listen up. Soon, she can fly again. And during that tale, that smile reappears. Some flight at least. She nods, stepping up to the front before jumping up, triggering the jetpack at as tall as she gets with the regular jump and flying it about an additional meter up, a bit forwards and landing quickly enough, her face making it clear she would want to do an actual flight "This.... is more or less how it should look." she starts

Okay, looked simple right? Just fly about three feet up. He gripped the throttle that Adhar explained and for the first time wondered if this was going to be like flying a ship. Which way was up again? He did a jump like Nubri did and pressed the button...only it was the one to shut the thrust off. He cleared his throat as he landed back on the ground, muttering, "Let me just try that one more time," before this time he went for the other button to ignite the thrusters. He was considerably rockier than Nubri was about switching it off and sort of stumbling when he landed.

Sion lightly jabs Nubri in the shoulder and grins at her, hearing that muttered remark. "Liar." And she stands... and she listens... and she tries not to shift her feet or drum her fingers in boredom. She /knows/ this stuff. Okay, maybe not that bit about heater burns, or that nifty trick for spinning in place, but those don't count! But now it's time for the fun part! She shifts the control stick into her hand, tapping the commands to bring the jetpack's fuel-tranfer system online. She doesn't bother with a running step, activating the pack and sending herself up and forward! It's a simple trick, and she flares the jets to cushion her landing. Not flashy, but fun!

Adhar nods as he watches the others try and do their jumps. < Watch your thrust, Crewman Deitrich, > he calls over the sound of the packs, < You're getting too much of a burst on the jump to compensate for. It's like a trigger - you squeeze it, like this. > Adhar demonstrates, jumping off the rock and executing a serviceable twelve-foot vertical leap before landing again. < Make sense? > A nod to Sion. < Good work, Corvara. Pretty sight! >

Zerna nibbles her lower lip as she watches the others. Sighing a bit she mumbles something quietly to herself before she just...attempt to do the task at hand. Instead....she just....goes up about...a few feet in the air before landing back down.

Nubri yet again grows cocky. So, she jumps up, twisting herself before starting her jetpack, flying a few feet up, still turning and spinning in the air, before turning it off, intending to land with a jetpacked pirouette. She manages to soften her fall yet slips at the last moment, falling onto the ground., While she is landed, she also sends a mock-glare at Si "And I am not a liar. I truly, utterly hate it."

Sion giggles, watching Nubri. "Good try. It's like this," she says, preparing to loft herself again... And the launch is good, as is the flight. It's only when she attempts that same pirouette that things go weird: She gets the spin too fast! Attempting to correct, she hits the ground spinning, staggers in a circle with the unaccustomed weight, and pitches forward into the sand facefirst, her Void-armored behind in the air in a most undignified position. She turns her head to look at Nubri, glad to have been wearing her helmet, at least! "I think I'm starting to hate it, too..."

Frankly Kaiden is not sure whether to feel amused or sympathetic with the two as he watched them kind of fail their jetpack launches, but it's his turn...and so any finger pointing he might've done at them will come right back to him. "Welp..." Instead of bursting, he tries squeezing like Adhar mentioned, kind of like squeezing a trigger gently. He does not go the 12 feet high up that Adhar does before he kills it, but he does go about 3 feet before he comes back down, a little rocky.

< Excellent, excellent, > Adhar calls, clapping gloved hands. < All right, let's try some reps, and then we'll start flying between canyons - Nubri, Corvara? Let's try and control the snark, all right? > Another half an hour or so and Adhar is satisfied that basic flight control is under people's belts, so to speak. < Right, > he says then, < Let's start heading over the rocks. Follow me, everyone. > Thumbing the flight grip in his hand, Adhar lifts off from the canyon floor in a single leap, carried aloft on tongues of alcohol-blue flame from the pack's dual exhausts.

Zerna had at least managed not to fly off into the wild blue yonder. There's a bit of thought as he starts the next task. Frowning slightly to herself she just nods to herself before she exhales and lifts off and takes off. Keeping herself steady she just aims for her target and lands, taking a few steps as she does.

Nubri blinks, raising herself, jumping up and taking a flight over towards the rocks, smiling <<"Do we fly through the holes?">> she asks, sounding excited..... and very much away from reality <<"Also, controlling snark can be just a *little* difficult.">>

Sion sticks her tongue out at Adhar's back when he turns to watch Kaiden's flight. A pilot not be snarky? Surely he jests. That half-hour of jumping does show some improvement in her technique, mostly on landings. It's a bit different than swooping; she's not sitting on the thing that does the flying. The adjustment is trickier than she would've thought. But her own jump in Adhar's wake is smooth and controlled, sending her out rockwards. She wobbles a bit on the landing. That's still proving tricky. But at least she stays on her feet!

Despite Kaiden's nervousness, he gains a little more confidence through the practice reps and he feels confident enough to gently fly after Adhar. The problem is, he's kind of not looking forward to flying around canyons and rocks where he could fall. He sets his jaw in concentration as he squeezes the trigger, doing more of a hover flight after Adhar than a real burst of power. Really, he thinks he's rather smooth for a first 'flight'.

Adhar's doing very well as he leads the little group around the canyons around the base - but as he goes, his concentration drifts ever so slightly, and he's not paying quite as much attention as he should. Taking a moment to fool around himelf, Adhar attempts a barrel roll - and clips the side of the canyon with his pack, which promptly gutters out on one side. Now he's flying with only one jet, and cursing jerks the pack (and the formation) back to the canyon floor before the base's entrance. < Ah, sons of circus whores, > he's muttering to himself as he settles onto the rock, banging the pack on his back with one fist a few times to get the jet nozzle to ignite once again. < Fortune's sweaty teats! >

Zerna turns and looks as she sees Adhar just...boom. Those blue eyes go slightly wide as she turns fully and calls out. "Are you alright?!" Frowning a bit she just watches him then snorts as she sees him punching the jet pack. "...I'll take that as a yes."

Nubri blinks, stopping her jetpack as she notices the falling jet "Captain?" she asks, stopping "Do you want to switch your pack, perhaps?" she suggests, landing close to him "I take that will be a no to my maneuvers."

<Nice move, Bos... oh, /felgercarb/!> Sion yelps, seeing the captain clip that wall. <I'm on my way!> She manages a fairly smooth landing near Adhar and his half-dead pack. "Wait, don't bang on that! That's the fuel transfer valve for this side. The coupling's broken loose. If you'll hold still a sec, I've got my multitool with me." She takes a better look. "Oh... not good. It looks like you whacked your power control circuit. I can route around it, but it'll only last a couple jumps or so. We'd better get back to the barn." She gets to work. It's not a pretty repair when she's done, but it'll at least spare Adhar from having to walk back to their staging point. "Done. Just watch that first step!"

< Yeah, I know, I know, > Adhar says as Sion moves to fuss over his pack - he detaches the mag-clamps and hands the unit over to her, then pulls off his helmet as everyone returns. "I'm all right, thanks," Adhar says, irritation written all over his tone. "But just let that show you all, okay? You can't screw around while in flight, otherwise you might end up turning into a meteor yourself. Let's wrap for today, and pick up in the near future."

Zerna exhales and then nods a bit. Crossing her arms she just shakes her head a bit then nods. "Sounds like a good idea to me...." With that she seems...well...relieved.
