FIRE SABER

OOC Date: March 19, 2020
Location: Millennium Falcon
Participants: Rey, Ben Solo

  • Rey Skywalker

The door to the cargo bay turned sleeping / study room for Rey is open, she's inside of it and she's standing at the work bench that is beside a cabinet set she'd brought in to the room. She's got a stack of books on the workbench and she's moving through them, one by one while reading the titles as best as she can. They're in an old language, a hard to read language, but she's getting better at it with Threepio's help. That poor droid, he does so much for everyone but he gets treated so poorly... even she catches herself doing it to him now and then, and since his sacrifice on Kijimi she's tried to be better to him. Even if his memories were restored in the end.

She moves to set one of the books down and she clips the edge of another stack, causing them to tip and then fall over! "No no no!" She turns to try to catch them before they fall, but the clatter all down toward the floor! All her sorting work, gone right out the airlock!

  • Ben Solo

The clatter of falling books draws Ben's attention, who happens to be passing by in the corridor when it happens. What is he doing? What is he on his way to do? He's got a few random hunks of metal in his hands, or so it seems when he pops his head in. "...everything okay in here?" he asks quietly, staring around the space with a sort of too-nosy but also unable to hide it well attitude. "It sounded like you just did something you're really proud of."

  • Rey Skywalker

Rey is standing above a mess of books on the floor, about 12 of them in varying degrees of sizes. They're not the Jedi Texts that she took from Luke, but they are Jedi-related, Sith-related even, things that she'd gathered on her travels by herself or with the others.

She crouches down to start to gather them up again, when she hears Ben's voice she pauses and looks up at him, holding three of them in her arms now. "All I ever do are things I'm 'really proud of'." She says in a voice that doesn't sound as though she's being serious at all, it sounds like she's being down right sarcastic. She's in a mood. Clearly. Rare for her, but still possible.

She starts picking up the rest of the books, one after the other, stacking them in her arms. "I've been helping fix the ship all night and I've... not gotten any sleep. My apologies, if I'm a bit short."

  • Ben Solo

"You've always been a bit short," Ben assures her as he steps into the room, and it's true that he's quite a bit taller than her, emphasized by the low round ceilings that run throughout the Falcon. He seems fairly at home here now, wearing his own boots and the same black shirt as before, when he fought with her on Exegol. He leans his long frame against the wall just inside the doorframe as if waiting for real permission to come inside, or maybe he's just awkward. His hands stay down at his sides, holding onto his bits of assorted junk.

"What are those books? I don't recognize them and Skywalker- uh, Luke only had a few that I remember." He doesn't go look at them closer, just stares from across the room. "Something is always broken on this ship."

  • Rey Skywalker

The joke and his other comments all make her snort a soft laugh. Because she agrees with them, except the short one, she likes her heigh---okay no, she wishes she were taller. A little anyway.

"For everything that this ship can do, there's a million and one things it could do better. Like not break whenever it's parked." She /is/ in a mood. Once she has the books picked up she starts to stand up again with them all raised up high enough to be just under her chin. She then scurries over to the cabinets to start to put them into the shelves there-in before she'll close the cabinet doors to seal them in. "They're journals, mostly. First hand accounts from other Jedi. Luke's has been invaluable to me, so I've been trying to collect the journals of others. Knights and Masters mostly... The Padawan journals are interesting, but... they don't generally give me anything that I don't already have."

She glances over to him then. "I've been studying, you know, all this time. Trying to be /better/ at all of this!" The burdens of rebuilding an Order, possibly weighing on her shoulders.

She still hasn't invited him in though.

  • Ben Solo

"It only does what it can do because it breaks every time it's parked," Ben replies with a shrug, crossing his arms over his chest but still holding onto his bits and bobs so it's sort of hard to do. "None of the mods crammed into this thing have any right to work together at all, but they do. It's the price you pay. Especially when the whole thing was put together by two crazy old men."

He nods at her explanation, little nods and then one final one when she says she's trying to be better. "And you are. Better at all of this. Than I ever was. You've gathered followers and you're teaching them the ways of the Force. Learning together. You've even built your own lightsaber." He glances towards it where it's lying on the table. "Guess how long it took to make mine."

  • Rey Skywalker

With the books put away, she closes the cabinets and even locks them with a small brass key that she has on a little leather strap. With that done she steps back to the bench and swipes a hand over it to just move a few things off toward the back of it where they fall into little bins.

"Your saber?" She asks, glancing over to him then. "Oh..." She doesn't like to think about his lightsaber. She stabbed him with it, and prior to that it haunted her dreams and sent chills throughou-- wait, was he talking about that one? Or was he talking about one before it, when he was with Luke as a student.

"How long?" She just asks then, her voice calmer now, as talking to him is helping her relax some. She turns to face him then, but keeps one hand on the work bench.

  • Ben Solo

"Three weeks." There's a hint of a smile there, at first. "I got a crystal and spent the next three weeks scribbling designs and trying to piece them together before one of them finally worked. I was good at drawing them. Building them was another thing," and he chuckles now, the smile finally breaking into a grin. "I don't know why but something about it just didn't fall into place for me. Which was hard because I was so good at everything else up till then, I didn't know how to handle it." He pauses for a second, looking over at the workbench she's just cleared off. "I didn't know how to /handle/ it," he says again, amusement still playing on his features.

  • Rey Skywalker

Everything about that just makes Rey stare at him for a second before her entire expression changes from the mood she was in moments ago to a smile and a laugh that makes her glance downward. A second later she glances up at him and raises her chin ever so slightly along with tipping her head to the left a little. "That was terrible." She says to him in a dry tone of her Core Worlds accented voice. "Truly. I'm in pain now."

She then straightens her stare and shakes her head. "Don't praise me too much though. In truth, I started on my own design two years ago. I just never tried to actually build it until... well, until I felt I'd earned the right to have one myself." Which was after Exegol, of course.

"So I'd be preparing and planning for a very long time, and the crystal I used was a gift from the people of Arisnar. From their ruler, in fact. She said they're native to that world, only well guarded in the underground caverns. Dangerous creatures and the like. Thankfully I avoided that element."

Rey then takes a step back and she motions to the bench beside her. "Are you ready to take another shot at it?" She asks him then and next. "There's no time like the present. I'll need you at your best to help out after all, I can't have you being dead weight around here." She teases him then with a small grin shown.

  • Ben Solo

When she indicates the workbench, he uncrosses his arms and holds up those seemingly-random bits of metal he'd been carrying. "I was actually on my way to do that, but I didn't know this was here. I was just going to use the old bench in the engine bay." He finally pushes off of the wall and steps further into the room, making his way over to the workspace. It's dim, and he sidesteps a piece of dangling bric-a-brac hung in a net from the ceiling to get there before he spreads out the parts.

"I uh. I don't think it'll take me three weeks this time," he comments quietly, in a tone that carries a hint of regret, maybe, before he moves on to sorting out the parts and arranging them in order from emitter to base. There's a lot of similarity to his old designs, here, but everything is bare metal and new. Finned vents around the engine, ridges and knurling here and there, a switch to activate it. The secret to this is that most of the parts are just scavenged pieces from old machinery that he's familiar with because... this is where he spent parts of his childhood.

"You know, once I do this, it's only a matter of time before the rest of the galaxy finds out about me." He glances towards her then, away from his work, dark eyes finding her next to him unless she's stepped back, a little more serious there than previously.

  • Rey Skywalker

Rey moves to get them both a couple of metal stools out of the area beneath the workbench. "I put this together after... after we broke Luke's saber. I used parts from an existing station for sabers that I found on Yavin IV." Anakin's, really. She sets a stool there for both of them if they so desire to sit and then she watches him approach and she glances over to him as he speaks. "Lets hope it doesn't take you three weeks." She flashes him another little smile.

At the next bit he says, she'd already glanced down at the parts he was holding, but his words draw her stare back up to his. "You're in the custody of the Jedi Order." She tells him flatly and evenly. "There's no better place for you to be. That's all anyone needs to be told." She wants to protect him, clearly, she knows what he did to this galaxy, but she doesn't want the galaxy to string him up for it either.

She looks away again then and raises a hand up to brush some of her loose strands of hair back behind an ear. "They can accept that answer."

  • Ben Solo

"And what if they don't?" It's the question they've both likely been pondering for the last few weeks since the Force spat him back out on Yavin IV. "What will you do then?" A hand slips into the pocket of his trousers and produces a small, glittering stone of profound worth, its iridescent surface dancing with a multitude of colors and glittering with flashes of fiery orange when he places it on the table in the midst of the saber pieces. "I need to know, if I'm going to do this."

  • Rey Skywalker

Rey's hands on her hips then as he counters with another question. It makes her look away from him again and she has to get a little bit of a defensive tone to her voice. "We'll jump that hurdle when it comes. /If/ it comes." She says to him then as she puts her eyes back over on to his. "Besides... It's not like they can contain you in a cell. Lock you away in a forever darkened corner. We've learned that now. You need but simply step back to wherever I am and..." She doesn't say anything more.

Because the gem draws her stare down to it and there-by shifts her thinking.

"That's a /Corusca gem/!" Rey exclaims, her right hand extending out to grab at it like she does, all grabby grabby style. "Where did you /get it/?" She asks, whether he yields it over to her or not.

  • Ben Solo

"I need to know you're not going to do anything you shouldn't for me." It's stated firmly and while Ben doesn't adopt her hands-on-hips posture, he does cross his arms over his chest. "I don't want to abuse our connection and I don't want you to be on the run because I am. We don't know the limits of this dyad." Then she's distracted and any chance of a rational conversation goes temporarily out the window.

He makes no effort to intervene between the scavenger's light fingers and the gem, and if anything his expression takes on a look of embarrassment, pursed lips and eyes closed briefly in resignation. "Lando. He wouldn't let me say no, and I didn't have the heart to fight with him over it. I know what it's worth. I don't know if it will work in this, but he made me promise to try it."

  • Rey Skywalker

Rey holds the gem up in front of her face at eye-level. She holds it between her first two fingers and thumb and slowly turns it around so it that it glitters in the ambient light around them. "I've read about them. In the books. Not much, mind you, but I've heard them referenced as rare options for sabers." She pauses. "It's beautiful." She says softly before she realizes she's gawking too much so she looks back over to him and offers it back.

At the rest of what he says she looks a little less enthusiastic. She drops herself down onto the stool she'd gotten for herself and she puts her hands on the edge of the bench. She doesn't look at him when she speaks next though. "I'll do whatever you want me to do with regard to that, when and if it happens. I won't do anything stupid." Another pause. Is she being honest? It's hard to say. She glances back at him then, up a little more too since she's seated on a work stool. "I promise."

She then motions to the bench. "Lets see if we can make this work now. I'm excited." She says with a slightly more chipper tone.

"You can't lie to me," Ben notes disapprovingly, taking the gem back from her and placing it back on the table, but he doesn't berate her further. "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it," he repeats instead, apparently agreeing to wait to disagree. He lets out a small sigh as he settles down on the other stool. "Let's see if this works."

A long moment passes while he gathers his thoughts and subsequently clears his mind of all the clutter, focusing on the task before him. The saber is there, in pieces and in spirit; it just needs to be assembled.

He takes a deep breath and closes his eyes.

Slowly, one at a time, the parts rise from the workbench and hover in place until each of them is floating freely in front of him. Only then do they begin to move towards each other, seeking their place, as this one slots in and that one spins and another clicks into position. The core solidifies around the Corusca gem, the outer casing glides over it as the engine and vents twist around each other and finally the red endcap seals everything in.

He opens his eyes and reaches out a hand to take it.

  • Rey Skywalker

For Rey, this process is mostly uninvolved. She doesn't speak up or say anything really. She does point a few times though, and she does move a tool toward him with little finger nudges. But when the pieces are all laid out properly, she just sits back and puts her hands in her lap... and observes.

She looks over at him when he opens his eyes and takes hold of it. "Solid." Rey quietly says, speaking for the first time in the span that it took to get to this stage. "I like it more than the last one." She quietly adds to him after a slight lean sideways toward him.

"There's a remote there." She points to the shelf on the top. "If you'd like to test and get comfortable with it. "I've made several of those since finding the first one in a box in the other room."

She'll move to stand up then.
