Rogue Squadron: Laying Mayhem

OOC Date: April 21, 2021
Location: CEC Shipyard - Corellia Orbit
Participants: Jax Greystorm, Karas Darkwing, Zandra naMuriel, Callax Dalso, Tallie Lintra

Rogue Squadron flashes into existence in low orbit around Corellia close to the CEC Shipyard, the New Republic's zealously guarded acquisition, and the first toehold into taking Corellia back into its fold. It's like coming into the city's bright lights after a sojourn in the country, though the Squadron's home system is the active hub of the newly established government. Corellia is old - a band of lights circles the planet of satellites, vast shipyards, docking stations, and, of course, warships.

Two Y-Wings carrying ion mines collapsed into the size of torpedoes are the center of the mission. Callax Dalso and Karas Darkwing will be laying out the specially programmed mines to bracket the station with protection. The mines are benign objects for New Republic ships, tuned to New Republic transponder frequencies, but will detect and knock out any ship not transmitting the correct frequency.

In the droid socket behind Commander Tallissan Lintra, Fiver does a broad scan of the system, showing the current position of the Sunstriker and the other FO RSDs Another ship looms large in her mental map - the New Republic's Hosnian Pride. <<"Group A, Y-Wings and X-Wings, go to the pre-established perimeter and start your work. Group B, go to your mark."

Karas in Rogue 2, flying in an Y-Wing. "Oh the Force this thing is slow." he grumbles, Spark chortles at him. "Yeah laugh it up spark plug." he chuckles. The R2 astromech chortles at him again cracking a joke. Karas shakes his head a little. "Oh well get ready, ion mines are ready to go." He quickly goes through the check of his ordinances again. He did it before he left but again as this isn't the first time he's flown in a Y-Wing in combat, it's just been some time since he's done it.

<<Copy that Rogue Leader, heading into position.>> he says as he breaks from Squad A heading to his destination. "Spark be ready for anything." he says as he begins pushing the engines hard. Having to admit these Y-Wings are faster then the ones he used to fly which is a saving grace. <<This is going to be fun.>> he chuckles into the tact-net. He switches over to another comm and begins playing music in his cockpit. It's not loud, but loud enough to get him in a groove.

The NR-2 is slow - faster than its old Rebellion- and Clone Wars-era forebears, perhaps, but it is absolutely slow. And yet it can take on a couple of starfighters with not /too/ much trouble, assuming the pilots were good enough. Considering the pilots are Karas and Callax, the odds are pretty good in the Republic's favor.

But that's bragging, so probably someone's gonna die.

<< Ten here, >> Callax calls over comms, << Boards are green and mines are too. Setting up for my run. >> Another glance at the telemetry display; the course needed to be taken is outlined, helpfully outlined in glowing yellow splines in a pseudo-3D tunnel. "Well we're going to get shot at, Babo darling," Callax says with a sigh, "You can be sure of that. Just you keep these shields in order." A faint squawk in response, and the pilot chuckles. "Yes, yes. Ever faithful, I know. You're too good for me."

Rogue Ten breaks from the formation, heading off toward the far side of the shielded station. Mines need to be laid and such.

In an X wing today, with Ono on board, in the droid socket, Zandra aka Violet aka Rogue 5 is settled in, as the group blinks into that low orbit. << Rogue 5 here. Acknowledged, Rogue Leader. >> She takes her position on A leader's wing, readying herself with a quick moment to calm herself, and an automatic deep breath of near meditation, as she reaches for the Force instinctively.

<< May the Force be with us, >> she adds, a common refrain through her thoughts and actions. The X wing isn't quite as zippy as she's used to, but Zan is comfortable in the X wing too, now, having flown it a few times. "Home away from home, right Ono?" she says, meaning the cockpit of the X. "And aren't you glad to be here, instead of back home listening to Snap the porg warble about - wait, what did the porg tell you about again?"

The system is alive with ships. Outside of the encrypted New Republic frequencies, the bandwidths are crowded with broadcasts, voices and telemetry feeds. The FO has its scans centered on the New Republic intruders. The flash of Rogue Squadron's arrival sets off an alarm in the Sunspear, the closest FO warship. Klaxons sound on its bridge, scrambling, TIE/SF's to form an unfriendly reception committee for the new arrivals.

Rogue Squadron breaks into two with X-Wings surrounding the Y-Wing carrying the ion mines like a hive of Naboo bees surrounding their Queen. Tallie flies protectively on the side farthest from the station, <<"On your Nine, Splash. Let's lay those eggs and get out of here.">>

A loud whistle from Fiver harmonizes with the scan alarm showing TIE/sf fighters on the Shipyard's zenith. <<"This is Rogue Leader, we have incoming. I have six on scan.">> Another six drop in behind them.

Rogue 9 entered in the system at the wrong point. The wayward X-wing was running through the system to join up with the rest of the members of Rogue squadron. "Look, don't blame this on me, you botched the jump" There's a raspberry from behind Jax head. "There's no need to be sore about it. Look we're here aren't we?" << Rogue Leader, This is Rogue 9. I'm green and all square. Somebody forgot to carry a two. Sorry for the delay. >> The s-fouls were already in attack mode. He rejoins on Zandra's wing as he beams to Rogue 5 Adn Rogue 2, << Sorry about that. Looks liek you found us some friends. >>

But of course they'd be coming right away. << Ten here, >> Callax says as they bank toward the dispersion zone, << Enemy on the way, be watchful. Mines are in the tubes, and I am beginning to drop. >> Whilst the TIEs head toward their location, Callax double-checks the bombing tubes and squeezes the thumb-triggers on the yoke; there's a soft rattle that shakes the ship's spaceframe as the first of the mines roll free from the ship, projected by magnetic shunts, and takes position thanks to its own internal computer and thruster system. Laying eggs, as it were.

Zan's wings are opened as she hits the throttle, zooming towards the incoming baddies. << You always show up at just the right time, Deadeye, >> she comments to Jax's teasing about finding friends. "Okay, Ono, keep those shields up, buddy." Yes, that is Zan's droid sounding very much like he's saying, 'Ohno, ohno, ohno,' in the background.

<<Rogue 5, targeting Dorn 2, >> she calls as she makes an attack run - she's trying to distract from the work of the Y wings, if nothing else. She waits until her reticule shows green, giving her a good target and she fires, the lasers slicing silently across the sky towards a wily enemy who is able to dodge. Zan promptly lifts the X wing to spin about so she can take another run, but also so she can perhaps stay a bigger target than certain other ships in the area.

<<Copy that Rogue Leader. This is a first, and I know Xer is watching and laughing his ass off.>> he says. Still pushing the Y-Wing's engines as hard as he can, the fighter/bomber creeps closer to it's destination. Checking the sensors, Karas sees the incoming fighters, and he glances to his 9 o'clock and sees Tallie there and he smiles, <> he says as he begins to bank his craft as he starts to near his destination. As he makes his run he grins, checking over the munitions, everything is reading green. <<Going in.>> he calls as he pulls the trigger and releases the first mine and starting his run.

Jax droid is complaining in the background that it's not his fault they came out at the wrong hyperspace point. It totally is. Meanwhile Jax is on Zandra's wing flying protection for Karas. << Got to be fashionably late, Violet. They think you're not cool if you're on time. I'll help you with 2. >> Though as the Two jukes out of both Zandra and his shots. << Who is in there? They're good or lucky. >>

<<"Hosnian Pride, this is Rogue Leader. We could use a hand protecting the mining ships.">> Tallie's voice is flattened by the encrypted com frequency. The TIE/SFs fly break into two wings, targeting the 'mother' ships and their load of ion mines.

<<"Copy that, Splash. Let's raise a glass to him when we get back. We have six coming to say hello.">> Space is split by lasers crisscrossing red and green as Rogue protects it's own.

A TIE tags Tallie twice, lighting the canopy of the T-85 green, then turns its sights on Darkwing who valiantly dodges while patiently laying his mines. Four, on either side of the Shipyard begin deploying shields and sensors.

Zandra takes a breath as she feels that tingle at the back of her neck that tells her there's danger, and she dips to the left, then down and around, dodging the fire returned her way with only some small complaint from Ono. On purpose she moves to shoot at one of the fighters aiming at the Y wing she's set to protect, trying to distract them. She swoops in, lasers blasting, and manages to hit the broad side of space. But perhaps she's enough of a distraction? That is what she's trying to do, at any rate. "Come on now, leave my friends alone," she mutters. Ono burbles at her, but at least he's stopped his hiccuping refrain for the moment. << Switching targets to try to draw them off Rogue 10,>> Zan calls over the encrypted comms.

Karas is pushing his fighter/bomber as quickly as he can making sure that he is able to continue on his path that was pre-designated for him to follow and drop the mines. Though as he does this, green energy beams streak in towards his fighter, warning klaxons are going off and Karas glances up and he rolls through both laser blasts. He has to stop dropping his mines and he weaves away tracking that enemy TIE that came in towards him. The holosensors pick up the enemy TIE and he gets a solid lock-on tone. He quickly fires and the Y-Wings energy cannons bark as they fire and as the energy beams streaks off, they slam hard into the TIE causing it to detonate. <<Splash one, going back to dropping mines.>> he calls as he gets back into position and begins finishing his job laying those Ion Mines.

As the Ties start to target the Y-wings, Jax breaks off from Zandra's wing to go after one of the targets going after Callax. Exine still grousing especially after Jax's shield took a hit. It doesn't help that Jax can't hit the broadside of a Corellian Opera house. Though the Tie that Jax was chasing does explode. << Nice work, Splash. >> Then he calls back to Exine, "Anyone ever tell you, you're a cheerful ray of sunshine? "

The Y-Wings slowly lay out the grid of mines that will wrap the Shipyard in a web that will catch any enemy ships unwary enough to come its way. Rogue's fighters loop and spin, fighting the TIEs that interfere with the slower ships. <<"These pilots have swollen heads to think they can take us with a full Squadron.">> Laughter and the exhilaration of the fight lighten the Commander's voice as she pushes her ship into a hard turn to come in high on a fighter. The wily Rogue pilots dodge lasers in lightning displays of acrobatics. Two TIEs catch Rogue Leader in their crossfire, pummeling the T-85, scorching the sides of the silver snub nose.

<<"No harm, no foul. Fiver is on it and has repaired shields.">> Tallie doesn't add -somewhat. They have enough to stay in the fight.

Zandra works on dodging because there's suddenly a lot of laser fire around this area of space. She lets the bottom fall out, which makes her stomach go whoomp, and then she zigs to the left, at which point, Ono screeches "OHNO!" as her canopy lights up with the flare of a laser going right over her head. "Yeah, that was close, Ono," Zan admits. "But we're okay - don't panic. It didn't hit us, see the sensors?" Ono mutters under his droid breath, but at least he does that quietly. Zan's ears might be ringing a bit, even as she twists her X wing into an aileron curve, and then corkscrews into an attack run on Dorn 5 once more. Her lasers shoot through empty space once more, but serve the purpose of pulling the Baddie TIE's away from the Y wings. <<I'm not sure I can distract them very long with shooting like this,>> she calls good-naturedly.

Exine's working on over time getting shields up. There's a metal arm here, a probe there, and a curse at a Tie fighter just for a good measure. Jax is in a dog fight and targeting Rogue 5. << I got you Violet. >> Jax says as he scores a couple hit on the tie driving it away from the y-wings. << Lets not tell anyone about this mission. I don't want to talk about your shooting percentage on this mission.>>

Rogue 2 is finishing the last of his run, and as he is getting ready to come around the station as he is fired upon. Again Rogue 2 is able to go evasive. "Alright, you're getting on my kriffing nerves." he mutters but he doesn't stop. Quickly righting his fighter/bomber and is able to launch the last of his mines. <<Mines are down, I'm out. Let's go!>> he says. His fighter moves as quickly as it can, he does get a locking tone and he quickly fires on the Lead fighter of Dorn squadron and he manages to get a glancing blow against the enemy TIE but that's it. <<Vectoring out now, let's go!>> he says.

The mines suspended around the Shipyard are like dewdrops on an imaginary web that the Squadron has woven. Each group has threaded the weapons in a half-sphere around the station. The first mines have finished deploying their shields, sending a steady stream of telemetry to the Shipyard and the Hosnian Pride, ready to paralyze any unfriendlies.

<<"Payloads are down, Rogue. Good shooting. Glad we didn't leave without taking a few with us. Time for us to say goodbye until the next time. Fabulous, Splash, we are on your six until you reach the jump point. See you on the other side.">>
